A REGO is a certificate Ofgem issues for each megawatt hour of renewable electricity generated in Great Britain. It is the evidence behind a renewable claim. If your contract is sold as renewable, ask for REGOs held against your supply, not the supplier's overall fuel mix.

What this does not do. This is general guidance on how certificates work. Whether a particular contract can be reported as renewable depends on the evidence the supplier provides for it.

What clients ask

A Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin. Ofgem issues one REGO for each megawatt hour of eligible renewable electricity generated in Great Britain. Suppliers use them to show how much of the electricity they sold came from renewable sources.

A REGO is the Great Britain version of a guarantee of origin. Certificates issued in the EU are a separate scheme, and Ofgem stopped recognising them for supplier fuel mix disclosure in Great Britain from 1 April 2023.

It means renewable generation matching your volume has been claimed for you, and that no one else can claim the same megawatt hours. It does not mean the electrons reaching your meter came from a wind farm, and REGOs can be bought separately from the power itself.

No. A supplier's overall fuel mix describes everything it sold, not your contract. For your own reporting, ask for REGOs held against your supply, or evidence of supply from a named generator.

Under the market based method of Scope 2 reporting, electricity backed by REGOs can be reported at a lower emission factor. The location based figure, using the grid average, must still be reported alongside it.

How a REGO comes about

A certificate's life, in four stages.

  1. Renewable electricity is generated in Great Britain, at a wind, solar, hydro or other eligible renewable site.
  2. Ofgem issues one REGO for each megawatt hour of that eligible renewable generation.
  3. A supplier claims REGOs against the volume it sells to you. Once claimed, no one else can claim the same megawatt hours.
  4. Under the market based method of Scope 2 reporting, electricity backed by REGOs can be reported at a lower emission factor. The location based figure, using the grid average, must still be reported alongside it.
